ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2010

NORTHERN IRELAND: SOLVED - NOT SETTLED?

Canal Court Hotel, Newry; Saturday 16th October 2010

Conference Overview
After the Belfast Agreement of 1998 was followed by the power-sharing Assembly, the international media began a general retreat from Northern Ireland. They assumed, incorrectly as it turned out, that there was no longer anything of such news value to warrant the personnel commitment of previous years. It would appear that they came to the collective conclusion that 'the Irish Question' was both solved and settled.

Experience has taught us, over recent years, that what is solved on paper and by international agreements, is not necessarily settled in practice.

The apparent inability of the political élite to come to a collective decision on many major issues facing us in Northern Ireland, is only matched by increasing violence and distrust both within and between the communities.

This makes our one day Conference on Saturday 16th October, and its title "Northern Ireland - Solved but not Settled?" all the more relevant.

This surely is the Conference not to be missed. What could be a more relevant subject at this point in our history?

The subjects for discussion, policing and justice, human rights, concern for our national economies and comment, offer a challenging and relevant debate. The line up of highly respected contributors offers us a welcome opportunity to share with those who are in the forefront in the Ireland of today.

The vision of the founders of the Irish Association has, evidently, yet to be realised - "to make reason and good will take the place of passion and prejudice in Ireland, North and South."

Do plan to come and share with us and help to make that vision a reality.

Brian Kennaway (Rev), President, Irish Association
